The Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) Through its membership of Diabetes Australia, Diabetes WA actively supports a range of research into varying aspects of diabetes. The Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) was established by Diabetes Australia in 1987. The Trust supports and develops diabetes research in Australia by providing vital funding towards the prevention, management and cure of diabetes, as well as enabling and fostering researchers in the field of diabetes. Each year, an expert panel carefully reviews grant applications and awards nominated projects funding according to an extensive peer review and investigation protocol. In 2010, DART provided approximately $2 million towards 27 new research projects. Of those awarded, there were two Western Australian recipients, with a Millennium Grant going to Professor Yogesan Kanagasingam (University of Western Australia) and a DART Grant allocated to Dr Gerard Hoyne (University of Notre Dame).
