The Walker Family
When their son was diagnosed with diabetes, the Walkers were desperate to learn whatever they could about the condition. They searched far and wide for information and support. This search culminated in the formation of the Diabetic Association in 1965. Ken Walker was instrumental in establishing the Association in order to support people with diabetes and their families, whilst providing much needed education.

"'Why us?' certainly was the question we asked ourselves Anzac Day, April 1961. Why should our 3 and a halfyear-old boy be diagnosed a diabetic? Here we were, his parents, thrust into a world we knew nothing about, with so much to learn and needing all the information we could get.'"

Ken's son attended the first camp for children with diabetes in January 1970. The Walkers strongly believe that through this type of interaction, their son's life changed for the better. The opportunity to meet other children with the same needs gave him a chance to understand and take responsibility of his disease without fear.

Now known as Diabetes WA, we provide practical, hands-on support and education to people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and those at risk of developing what has become the world's fastest growing chronic disease.

Why the Walker Society?
In March 2007, Diabetes WA launched the Walker Society to acknowledge the generosity of those who have made a bequest to Diabetes WA. Walker Society members are respected for their forethought, kindness and commitment to helping people with diabetes and their families. Walker Society members also receive regular newsletters and invitations to Diabetes WA special events.
