Our Services

Whether you’ve just been diagnosed, are at risk or have had diabetes for many years, we are sure to have a program to help you through your diabetes journey. Diabetes WA Information and Advice Line (DIAL)

You can call DIAL on 1300 136 588 to receive assistance from a qualified and credentialed diabetes educator. This confidential service can be accessed between 8.30am and 4.30pm weekdays for:

  • Education
  • Information
  • Counselling
  • Problem solving
  • Referral

Alternatively, you can email one of educators for a confidential response at dial@diabeteswa.com.au.


Shop Smart

During this two hour supermarket tour, one of our diabetes educators will show you how to decipher and analyse food labels in order to make healthy choices for every day meals. To make your shop smart experience even easier, we have created a "where to park" sheet which you may find handy if you are unfamiliar with the supermarket you will be visiting. Shop Smart is free to ndss registrants & Diabetes WA members.


Cook Smart

After this 90 minute interactive food preparation session conducted by one of our diabetes educator dietitians, you will leave equipped with a range of cooking techniques that will enable you to prepare tasty and healthy, low gi snacks and meals. You will also be encouraged to taste test a variety of healthy products that you may not have tried before.

All cook smart sessions are held at Diabetes WA’s Subiaco office and are free to ndss registrants and Diabetes WA members.


Getting started

Take the first step to understanding your diabetes! If you have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and are you confused about how to effectively manage the condition, then this information session is for you. The session covers:

  • What is diabetes?
  • How can the National Diabetes Service Scheme (NDSS) and Diabetes WA help you?
  • Lifestyle tips
  • Blood glucose levels
  • And where to from here…?
You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and meet others in a similar situation to you. sessions are run bimonthly at Diabetes WA’s Subiaco office.


Information sessions

These sessions are full of valuable information and expert advice on topics relating to diabetes management, diabetes prevention and other health conditions. Our sessions are on a range of interesting topics. Some past sessions include; retinopathy, depression, bladder and bowel health and hearing loss. Check out our calendar for upcoming sessions.


Living with diabetes

The Living with Diabetes program has been designed to equip you with the necessary skills to manage and live well with your type 2 diabetes. It consists of six interactive sessions full of practical information and advice including:

Session 1 – Getting Started
Session 2 – Balancing Life: Stress Reduction and Physical Activity
Session 3 – Balance in Your Eating
Session 4 – Shopping Tour
Session 5 – Risk Management, Medication and Diabetes
Session 6 – Foot Care and Self-Management

Resource room

The Diabetes WA resource room which houses a comprehensive range of diabetes and health related books, magazines, fact sheets and product samples. For a current listing of available resources, click here.


Kellion Awards

All Australians who have had diabetes for 50 years or more are eligible for a kellion victory award. We also encourage doctors, other health care professionals, diabetes associations and support groups to nominate likely recipients. To find out more about the Kellion Awards, or to nominate please contact kate bourne on (08) 9325 7699 or email kate.bourne@diabeteswa.com.au alternatively, you can download a copy of the application form, fill out and return to us.


Advocacy

n: the act of pleading or arguing in favour of something, such as a cause, idea, or policy; active support.

At Diabetes WA, we take the matter of advocacy very seriously and our advocacy officer works hard to eliminate unfair practices and unreasonable exclusions of people with diabetes in the areas of; the workplace, healthcare, leisure/recreation and the transport system.

The Diabetes WA 2009-2010 community grants program

Diabetes WA is committed to delivering and supporting initiatives that assist people living with, affected by and at risk of, diabetes. The Diabetes WA community grants program has been established in order to financially support the development and implementation of local activities that provide a tangible benefit for people with, or at risk of, diabetes and/or raise awareness and understanding of the condition.

The two application rounds for 2008-2009 financial year have now closed; however stay tuned as we anticipate on offering two more grants in the 2009-2010 financial year. FoodCents

The FoodCents program will show you how to maintain a well balanced diet while saving on your budget. Learn how to compare food prices per kilogram, spend your food budget wisely and cook healthy, tasty snacks and meals for the family. The Cancer Council is offering foodcents workshops to members of the community free of charge throughout 2009.
