A research group, based at the University of Leicester, recently investigated the independent effects of fruit and vegetables on the incidence of type 2 diabetes via a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hospitalisations related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasing, and look likely to remain a significant burden to Australia’s health care system, according to a report released today by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

A recent study facilitated by a team of Walter and Eliza Hall Institute researchers has found that inflammation-causing cells in fat tissue may explain the link between obesity and diabetes.

Diabetes Australia today expressed strong concern about the Coalition's proposal to scrap $449 million of new funding for diabetes care, as recently announced by the Labor Government.

This year's focus on healthy eating was well-recieved by attendees at both the Mandurah and Claremont expos. The team from Diabetes WA were kept very busy providing food tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Diabetes in Western Australia will remain in the spotlight and high on the Government's agenda with Diabetes WA President and Board Chair, Moira Watson, nominated to the newly formed Commonwealth Diabetes Advisory Group.

On Friday the 9th of July, Diabetes WA joined forces with Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) to host a fun-filled cooking class for children with diabetes and their siblings. This school holiday activity gave the kids an opportunity to chop, mix, roll and fry a variety of foods with Perth-based company Turban Chopsticks.

National Diabetes Week (NDW) concluded on Saturday the 17th of July, with the Week being a great success in WA and nation-wide. In WA, we hosted a number of initiatives and activities, all of which reinforced our message of encouraging people (particularly those over 40) to consider their predisposition to type 2 diabetes.

Around nine in every 1,000 Western Australians in their 30’s live with diagnosed type 2 diabetes but when compare to the 40-50 age group, prevalence increases threefold.

Each year DWA reaches out to members to invite nominations for this opportunity to contribute to our positive future.
