Diabetes WA is working alongside Goldfields Esperance GP Network to bring vital health services to Kalgoorlie through a series of diabetes management programs.
Approximately 700 Kalgoorlie residents have diabetes and access to education on managing the condition can help them avoid serious health complications.
Diabetes WA’s Cook Smart and Shop Smart programs were rolled out this month, teaching participants about making healthy food choices.
Katie Northam, Dietitian at Goldfields Esperance GP Network believes that Cook Smart is an effective and hands on way for participants to learn about healthy eating.
"The cooking session highlights the fact that healthy food can be tasty food and that healthy cooking needn't take long to prepare,” she said.
Shop Smart sessions were also held, showing people how to read labels proficiently and be confident in making healthier food choices in the supermarket.
Helen O'Sullivan, Diabetes Educator at Goldfields Esperance GP Network, is excited to be partnering with Diabetes WA as diabetes education programs are often lacking in regional areas.
"I highly recommend these educational activities to anyone in the Goldfields who happen to have diabetes – All my attending clients have expressed how happy they were with the activities on offer,” she said.
Anyone interested in future workshops can contact the Goldfields Esperance GP Network on 9021 6610.
