Diabetes WA dietitian, Sue Stockdale said that regular consumption of wholegrains may assist in the prevention of type 2 diabetes as well as in diabetes management.
“Research has shown that eating three serves of wholegrains per day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 20-30%,” Ms Stockdale said.
“As wholegrains are a slow release carbohydrate with high fibre content, they are also beneficial for diabetes management by assisting with glycaemic control.”
“Additionally, short term clinical trials have found that consumption of wholegrains can lower the fasting insulin levels of overweight people.”
“For people who have diabetes or who are at risk of type 2 diabetes I recommend a well balanced diet that includes food from all of the main food groups, including grains, to deliver all of the nutrients our bodies need.”
