National Diabetes Week 8-14 July 2012

De-Stress for Diabetes this National Diabetes Week!

National Diabetes Week, 8-14 July, is the key awareness-raising activity for diabetes in Australia. In 2012, Diabetes WA will be working to raise awareness of stress-management techniques to help with diabetes.

Living with diabetes can be tiring and worrying for the person, and also for their family and friends. Mental health issues affect up to half of those living with diabetes so it is important that people do what they can to look after themselves and manage the emotional demands of the condition.

What are the common signs of stress?

  • Headaches, back or neck pain
  • Muscle tension
  • Grinding teeth
  • Heartburn
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability

A little bit of stress is good but a lot of stress for a long time that isn’t removed or managed will result in the blood glucose levels remaining high. This can increase therisk of the long term effects of diabetes and mental health issues.

How can stress be managed?

The key to managing stress is to recognise it early and do something about it or try to include regular stress management as part of your lifestyle. For a full fact sheet on stress management and diabetes please click here
