Diabetes Eye Screening

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes and is the leading cause of blindness in Australian adults. It is estimated that one out of every three Aboriginal people with diabetes has this complication. Improving access to screening and eye health services for Aboriginals is an important step if we are to take steps to remedy this situation.

In 2014 Diabetes WA partnered with Lions Outback Vision, a small team of eye health professionals, to improve eye health services in the Kimberley region of WA. Our charity raised $70,000 for Lions Outback Vision, which was used to buy a TxCell Scanning Laser Delivery System.

This portable device enabled eye health professionals to visit some of the most remote locations in our State and treat people with diabetic retinopathy in their own community.
