Diabetes WA will be hosting its annual Ken Walker Corporate Lunch on Friday 13 September 2019.
This year, the lunch has been renamed to honour one of Diabetes WA’s founders, Ken Walker.
When Ken’s 3-year-old son, Ean, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1961, he and his wife, Betty, found there was minimal information and no support available for families in WA.
Ken joined forces with others in the same situation and worked to create an organisation that would inform and support those affected by diabetes – the Diabetic Association of Western Australia which grew to become Diabetes WA.
The first meeting of The Diabetic Association of Western Australia was held in 1965 and was attended by 100 people. The organisation aimed firstly to educate people about living with diabetes, because in 1965 the general population of WA knew very little about the condition and how prevalent it is. It also aimed to advocate and fundraise for those living with diabetes whilst creating a community.
In line with the event’s theme, Challenging the Status Quo, Professor Barry Marshall, AC FRACP FAA FRS MBBS will share the compelling story of his role in revolutionising medicine’s understanding and treatment of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. Professor Marshall was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2005 for his work on this project.
As the keynote speaker on the day, Professor Marshall will discuss the importance of perseverance, tenacity and vision in challenging the status quo in a global industry.
Held at Fraser’s Restaurant and hosted by Steve Mills from 6PR radio the event is a great opportunity to learn how you can support Western Australians living with diabetes, whilst networking with other professionals in Western Australia.
