Manage Your Diabetes

What is the NDSS?

The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) is an initiative of the Australian Government. It is designed to help you better understand and manage your diabetes.

The NDSS allows any Australian with diabetes access to subsidised products, information and support services.

If you have any questions regarding the National Diabetes Service Scheme, call 1800 637 700.

Why should I register?

People who are registered with the NDSS can access a range of subsidised products to assist in their diabetes management including:

  • subsidised blood glucose testing strips
  • subsidised urine testing strips
  • free insulin syringes and pen needles (if you require insulin or an approved non-insulin injectable medication)
  • subsidised insulin pump consumables for eligible registrants.

People registered with the NDSS can also access a range of information and support services, including Diabetes WA programs, for free.

Am I eligible?

You can register with the NDSS if you:

  • have been diagnosed with diabetes by a doctor, endocrinologist or credentialled diabetes educator
  • live in Australia, or are visiting from a country with which Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement on an applicable visa. For more information on the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement visit the Department of Human Services website (external link).
  • hold (or are eligible to hold) a Medicare card of Department of Veterans Affairs card.

People with pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance are not eligible to register with the NDSS.

Do I automatically become a member of Diabetes WA?

The NDSS and Diabetes WA are two different entities. The NDSS ensures the provision of subsidised product to people with diabetes, while Diabetes WA is a community-based charity that focuses on diabetes awareness, education, and research.

Registering with the NDSS does not give you membership of Diabetes WA. There are many advantages of becoming a member of Diabetes WA – find out how it can benefit you.
