The DESMOND Program Diabetes Education and Self-Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed To see upcoming programs in your area visit the Program List here. The DESMOND Program (Diabetes Education and Self Management for Ongoing and Newly Diagnosed) is an education tool designed to support people living with type 2 diabetes. It is delivered by specially trained DESMOND Educators who will assist your self- management by increasing your knowledge and understanding of what type 2 diabetes can mean for you. Diabetes WA is the first organisation to deliver DESMOND in Australia, and the program is currently only available in WA. Living with Diabetes The Living with Diabetes program has been designed to equip you with the necessary skills to manage and live well with your type 2 diabetes. It consists of six interactive sessions including: Session 1 – Getting Started Session 2 – Balancing Life: Stress Reduction and Physical Activity Session 3 – Balance in Your Eating Session 4 – Shopping Tour Session 5 – Risk Management, Medication and Diabetes Session 6 – Foot Care and Self-Management Click here to view the schedule. Living with Diabetes is free to NDSS Registrants & Diabetes WA members. MeterSmart group education program This session is a must for anyone that finds blood glucose testing painful and unreliable. Diabetes WA is running a new interactive information session that will help you master the art of blood glucose monitoring. The 90-minute program, run by an experienced diabetes educator, will leave you feeling more confident about testing your blood glucose levels. The session covers: How to effectively self-test your blood glucose levels The range of meters available How testing fits into effective diabetes management MeterSmart is free to NDSS Registrants & Diabetes WA members. FootSmart group education program Diabetes can cause damage to your feet. Foot problems are the most common cause for a person with diabetes to be admitted to hospital. If you have diabetes, come and learn how to look after your feet. Sessions are available every month at Belmont or Subiaco. FootSmart is FREE for NDSS registrants and Diabetes WA members, and $20 for all others. ShopSmart group education program During this two hour supermarket tour, one of our diabetes educators will show you how to decipher and analyse food labels in order to make healthy choices for every day meals. To make your ShopSmart experience even easier, we have created a 'where to park' sheet which you may find handy if you are unfamiliar with the supermarket you will be visiting. Click here to download a copy or contact us to have a copy sent to you. ShopSmart is free to NDSS Registrants & Diabetes WA members. CookSmart group education program After this 90 minute interactive food preparation session, conducted by one of our diabetes educator dietitians, you'll be equipped with a range of cooking techniques that will enable you to prepare tasty and healthy, low GI snacks and meals. You will also be encouraged to taste-test a variety of healthy products that you may not have tried before. CookSmart sessions are held at Diabetes WA’s Subiaco and Belmont offices and are free to NDSS Registrants and Diabetes WA members.

Diabetes WA's Information Sessions These sessions are full of valuable information and expert advice on topics relating to diabetes management, diabetes prevention and other health conditions. Our sessions are on a range of interesting topics, including: retinopathy, depression, bladder and bowel health and hearing loss. Check out our calendar for upcoming sessions. Diabetes WA information sessions are free to Diabetes WA members. Kids and Parents Activities Diabetes WA, together with Princess Margaret Hospital, offer a program of events for children and families living with diabetes in Western Australia. A wide range of activities provide the opportunity for children with diabetes to learn, meet others just like them and to share their experiences in a fun, safe and supportive environment. As parents play a key role in the management of their child's diabetes, specifically-designed activities are also available to those who wish to receive up-to-date diabetes-related information and support from other parents. Resource Library The Diabetes WA Subiaco office has a range of recipe books and specific resources to help you learn more about diabetes and its related issues. These are available for people to read and photocopy. We also have many books for sale through our retail stores and DWA members are entitled to a significant discount.
