Our SMART programs are back

SMART

Are you looking for a short, friendly group workshop that helps build your confidence to manage your diabetes in your own way? Diabetes WA can help.

Our SMART programs cover helpful topics like medicines, foot care, reading food labels and understanding carbohydrates.

The sessions are hands-on and interactive with fun activities and discussions so you can learn and share ideas with other people who also have diabetes.

A trained facilitator keeps the session on track and helps you notice the information that matters most to you, but the real expertise comes from you and the others in the group living with diabetes every day. The facilitator is there to guide, not to instruct or judge.

What are the SMART programs?

We have four programs that cover specific topics over 2-3 hours.

ShopSMART

Want to make informed choices about the foods you buy?

This session will help you to gain confidence in decoding product information and nutrition information panels.

You’ll be given plenty of real-life products to look at and compare, so next time you visit a supermarket you will be able to make the best decisions for your health and wellbeing.

For people living with all types of diabetes.

CarbSMART

Confused about carbs? No wonder, given the overwhelming number of diets and eating plans out there.

CarbSMART is a short workshop designed to help you find the answers you need, so you can enjoy quality carbohydrates in a way that suits you and your diabetes.

Primarily for people living with type 2 or gestational diabetes, it may be suitable for some people living with type 1 diabetes.

FootSMART

Your feet are made for walking so let’s keep them healthy.

FootSMART will give you the skills and knowledge to develop your own daily footcare routine, choose the right footwear and know when and how your health care team can help you, so you are always putting your best foot forward.

For people living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

MedSMART

If you have type 2 diabetes, your doctor may prescribe medication to help you manage your blood glucose levels.

The different medications, doses and instructions can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming and you might even skip some doses.

MedSMART is a short, easy workshop that helps you understand how your medications work and how to take them safely, deal with side effects and talk with your health team about them so you can feel more confident managing your diabetes.

For people living with type 2 diabetes.

Where are they held?

SMART workshops are held face-to-face in different places around the state so you can choose the topic and location that works best for you.

How much do they cost?

All SMART workshops are completely free for you and a support person if you’d like to bring someone with you.

Bookings are essential. You can book online or call the Diabetes WA Helpline on 1300 001 880 to save your spot. NDSS registration is not required.
